Andros Townsend reveals ‘incredible’ aspect of Ryan Sessegnon’s game

Andros Townsend has revealed that he has previously been impressed with the ability of Tottenham Hotspur wide man Ryan Sessegnon.

Sessegnon burst into the limelight as a teenager at Fulham and after a promising first season in the Premier League with the Cottagers in 2018-19, was brought to Spurs for £25m.

However, the youngster did not have the impact he would have hoped for in his first season in North London after he found game time hard to come by.

Tottenham decided to loan the 20-year-old out to Hoffenheim last summer after their acquisition of Sergio Reguilon from Real Madrid.

The decision has paid dividends since the England Under-21 international has received plenty of first team football at the Bundesliga side and has demonstrated glimpses of the quality that saw him being heralded at Fulham.

Sessegnon has admitted that he has the aim of being a regular for Tottenham in the future but reports indicate that the youngster could be loaned out again by the club next season, with both Reguilon and Ben Davies ahead of him in the pecking order.

Townsend certainly has no doubts about Sessegnon’s quality as the former Tottenham winger admitting that he is especially impressed with the youngster’s anticipation.

The Crystal Palace man said on Sky Sports Football (7:43pm, March 28, 2021): “I think the main thing that stuck out when I used to watch him at Fulham in that season is his anticipation of where the ball was going to go was incredible.

“For a player of such a young age, I think he scored 15 or 20 goals that season, and most of them were within the width of the 18-yard box.”

Allowing Sessegnon to spend another season out on loan would be the ideal situation for all parties. Some Spurs fans might want the 20-year-old to replace Ben Davies next season as Reguilon’s main understudy next season but I do not believe that is likely. Davies provides more defensive solidity compared to Reguilon and the Welshman’s ability to play on the left-hand side of a back three makes him a valuable option to have in the squad.
