Andros Townsend has proved that he has the ability to cut it in the Premier League according to Harry Redknapp.
The Tottenham Hotspur winger has been on loan at QPR since January and has been their best performer in a disappointing season. Redknapp knew of the talents of Townsend during his time in charge at Spurs and Townsend has stepped up to the plate and has a lot of Spurs fans relishing his return to the Lane.
Townsend, 21, caught the eye again in QPR’s 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at the weekend. We all know that his chances with us are limited due to the stellar form of both Aaron Lennon and Gareth Bale this season, but there have been occasions when either one or both have been injured and the lack of width has been there for all to see.
“He’ll be a top player,” Redknapp told the press.
“He gets at people, he attacks you. They paid £10m for the left-back and he has ripped him apart.
“He is relentless. He just runs at you, runs at you, runs at you. He has been first-class.
“It’s difficult for him back at Spurs. You’ve got (Aaron) Lennon and (Gareth) Bale there, so it will be hard for him to play regularly. He’ll have his work cut out.
“But he’ll be a good player for Spurs next year. He will go back there a better player.
“He has proved to himself what he can do. He has proved he can play in the Premier League.”
The question is, will Townsend settle for a bit-part role at Tottenham next season after tasting regular first-team football in the top-flight? There is no question he is a talent that we have hold on to.
He added: “It is up to Tottenham. He will want to play.
“He is good enough to play somewhere. And he has proved he can do that.
“I’ve played him off the right, whereas they played him off the left all the time. I think the right suits him.
“He comes in off the right and can get shots in. I think it’s a move that suits him.”
