Andy Gray has urged Mauricio Pochettino to make Harry Kane the permanent captain of Tottenham Hotspur.
Kane who is vice captain at Spurs is currently wearing the armband on a temporary basis with club captan Hugo Lloris ruled out with a long term injury.
The beIN SPORTS pundit felt that it was time to Tottenham give the captaincy to the club’s best player.
There was also a chance in captaincy on the other side of North London when Unai Emery took the decision to strip Granit Xhaka off the Arsenal captaincy and hand it to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang instead after the Swiss international fell out with his own fans when being substituted last weekend.
Gray claimed that it was a great decision by the Arsenal boss as Aubameyang’s personality made him the right choice for the role.
Speaking about whether strikers make good captains, Gray told the beIN SPORTS podcast: “Alan Shearer will tell you strikers make great captains. You need to be a big personality. Aubameyang is a massive personality.
“It is the type of something he will enjoy and because he is the big man. For that reason, that is why I would make Harry Kane captain at Tottenham. Who is my best player? Harry Kane. Who sets the best examples? Harry Kane. Make him captain.”
Mauricio Pochettino has stuck by his captain Hugo Lloris since arriving at the club and resisted calls to strip the Frenchman from his captaincy following his involvement in the drunk driving incident last season.
Spurs Web Opinion
There is no doubt Kane is a fantastic leader and is a great role model both on and off the pitch. He will eventually be made club captain when Lloris moves on but there is no reason to strip the Frenchman off the captaincy at the moment. Whether he wears the armband or not, Kane will still be one of the main leaders in the Spurs dressing room.
