Ange Postecoglou backs one struggling Spurs player to prove people wrong

A few Tottenham players have been receiving criticism lately, but Ange Postecoglou has come to the defence of one player and insists that, with the hard work he puts in, a positive turnaround is on the way in the future.

If players work hard, Postecoglou is happy

Tottenham‘s form of late has been rather impressive. Even when the team lost to Newcastle United and Arsenal, all the signs were there that positive things were coming.

Some of the results have been disappointing, of course, and that led to some fans very vocally showing their frustration with certain players.

Timo Werner has struggled to make a significant impact so far this season, and he has been getting some stick from the fanbase recently.

Discussing this matter with the press (via Football.London), Ange Postecoglou backed Werner to turn it around and insisted that, from what he sees in training, there are no concerns over the player.

He said: “We’ve mentioned so far Vic apparently was getting criticism, Brennan and now it is Timo’s turn. It is part of being a professional footballer.

“You are always going to get criticism, you are always going to get scrutiny and it’s how you react to it. For me what I want is to see them coming in every day and working hard at their game.

“If they are getting criticism and not performing and I see their attitude is not great, that is when I intervene because there is only one way to change that, but Timo’s a professional.

“He comes in every day working hard and I have no doubt he can make an impact for us. The best way to do that is to focus on his football and keep doing the right things.”

Vicario and Johnson have proven people wrong

As Postecoglou says, fans had been getting on the back of Brennan Johnson and Guglielmo Vicario recently. Johnson has silenced the critics very quickly, scoring three goals in three games since deactivating his social media accounts.

Vicario, meanwhile, had been questioned after a shaky start to the season, but he put in a man-of-the-match performance against Qarabag on Thursday night.

I want Werner to come good, but I have doubts

While I would love to see every player at Spurs succeed, I just haven’t seen anything from Werner that tells me he is going to find some form.

I want to be wrong, and if Postecoglou trusts him, then I trust him, but we need to see a marked improvement very soon from Werner or that loan extension will look like an odd decision.
