Ange Postecoglou receives gloomy diagnosis ahead of big Tottenham summer

The Athletic’s Jack Pitt-Brooke has explained why Ange Postecoglou’s prospects of being in charge at Tottenham next season are not too promising and has made a worrying prediction about the club’s potential search for a new manager this summer.

Tottenham Hotspur find themselves in a very strange position right now as while their Premier League season has been an unmitigated disaster, they still have a chance to make this their most successful campaign in nearly two decades.

Winning the Europa League will not only end the club’s 17-year trophy drought but will also ensure passage into next season’s Champions League, which they desperately need, given that Spurs’ finances are not in good shape right now.

Reports over recent weeks have suggested that Postecoglou needs to win the Europa League to hang onto his job, but Jack Pitt-Brooke believes that the Australian might have already reached a point of no return.

Tottenham are likely to sack Ange Postecoglou

Pitt-Brooke believes that no matter what happens from now until the end of the season, the 59-year-old is unlikely to be in charge for the start of the new campaign.

He explained that while Tottenham may not have made an official decision to sack Postecoglou yet, the noise coming out of the club is that a change at the top is very much on the cards.

Pitt-Brooke said on The View From the Lane podcast: “Our information is Postecoglou’s position as manager is in real doubt, I think. But I think that it’s probably, to me it feels likelier rather than not, that they will make a change this summer.

“Of course, I don’t think anything’s been, you know, formally, officially decided yet. There are still nine league games left this season. Of course, there is also still the Europa League.

“Certainly, the noise from Tottenham is that everyone’s very much focused on, on a successful as possible conclusion to this season. But it does feel to me as if a change is likely.”

Tottenham’s managerial search could be chaotic

Reports over recent weeks have claimed that Andoni Iraola is the clear front-runner to replace Postecoglou at Spurs, but Pitt-Brooke believes that there might be twists and turns in Tottenham’s managerial search.

The journalist predicted that we could even see a long, drawn-out saga such as the one we did in 2021, with Nuno Espirito Santo eventually getting the job.

He added: “While I think Iraola is the leading candidate, I don’t think there’s any, there’s any certainty that he would necessarily get the job. We don’t know what he wants, which of course is important to this.

“We also mentioned the piece that Marco Silva of Fulham and Thomas Frank of Brentford are also names under consideration, which means that we’re heading into, it looks like we’re probably going to head into another one of those summers, a bit like the summer of 2023 or the summer of 2021, where everything is up for grabs really, and we know what these summers are like.”
