Ange Postecoglou sends strong message to Daniel Levy with Tottenham jab

Ange Postecoglou thinks he has done well to last even two years in the Tottenham job, and sends a message to Daniel Levy about constantly chopping and changing.

Tottenham’s struggles in the Premier League show no signs of dissipating, with the club’s latest defeat to Chelsea piling even more pressure on the Australian coach.

Postecoglou did himself no favours with his controversial gesture to the Spurs fans, and the pressure is now starting to mount on him as he seems to have exhausted most of the goodwill that he had built up last season.

Postecoglou has been accused of arrogance by some pundits, and the Tottenham head coach now acknowledges that there is just one way to question the noise surrounding the club.

Ange Postecoglou Daniel Levy

Postecoglou knows what he needs to do to silence critics

Tottenham Hotspur find themselves in a strange situation because, while this season has been a disastrous one so far, they know it can end up being the club’s most successful one in a long time if they lift the Europa League trophy.

Ahead of his side’s quarterfinal showdown against Eintracht Frankfurt, Postecoglou admitted that lifting the trophy in Bilbao is the only way to convince doubters that this project is headed in the right direction.

When asked if winning the Europa League will change everything, he responded (via Football.London): “No it doesn’t change everything. For sustainable success, you’ve still got to stick to a course of events. But what a trophy does is eliminate some of the noise around the club and what other people feel is missing.

“It’s not what I feel is the only piece that’s missing. I think you need to build something sustainable. And I’ve said that from the start. We started that last year with the way we played and the squad we have, a young squad we want to keep growing, but certainly, it would quieten a lot of the noise, whether internally or externally, about what’s missing at this club.”

When pushed on if it is the only way to quieten the noise, Postecoglou responded: “Probably, from that point of view. I think you’re right there. I’m well into my second year and if people don’t really see what I’m trying to do at this moment I don’t think they’re ever going to see it so if a trophy is the only way – it seems to be the only way – well OK let’s see if we can deliver that and see what happens.”

Ange Postecoglou warns Tottenham against chopping and changing

Over recent days, some sources have suggested that Postecoglou is likely to be sacked by Tottenham in the summer no matter what happens in the Europa League.

However, the 59-year-old believes that rather than constantly chopping and changing, Daniel Levy and Tottenham need to stick to one method over the long term to achieve sustained success.

When asked what has to change for the club to regularly start winning trophies, Ange Postecoglou said: “It’s hard for me to say because every manager’s got their own sort of views on this. I just don’t think it’s about the managers themselves. I’ve almost lasted two years, it’s pretty good for Tottenham.

“At some point, I think the club needs to stick to something. If I say it now it sounds self-serving and defeats the purpose, so maybe not now…But I think if that if you want to change the course of your events, you need to change materially a lot of things in terms of the way your outlook as a club.

“From my perspective, while I’m in this chair, is to see if I can find a way to navigate it that others have struggled to do that. But, as you rightly point out, there’s life after this for everybody including Tottenham and me.”
