‘Another brilliant game’ – Ian Wright praises Spurs following hard-fought win at West Brom

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has praised the defensive performances of Eric Dier and Sergio Reguilon after Tottenham kept another clean sheet at The Hawthorns on Sunday and beat West Bromwich Albion 1-0.

The Tottenham defence came under plenty of criticism after their late capitulation against West Ham United at the start of last month.

However, Jose Mourinho’s men have since proven their defensive capabilities by conceding just once in their last three Premier League games against Burnley, Brighton and West Brom, and even the Tariq Lamptey goal should have arguably been disallowed for a foul on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the build-up.

While there have never been any doubts over Reguilon’s attacking qualities, there have been one or two instances so far this campaign that the Spainish international has been found wanting defensively.

However, he proved against Slaven Bilic’s men on Sunday that he has the defensive discipline to keep it tight at the back, as he and Dier hardly allowed West Brom to threaten down their right-hand side, and Wright for one was certainly impressed with the pair.

The pundit told BBC Match of The Day 2: “His [Dier’s] defensive awareness today was brilliant and just what they needed. They needed to dig in.

“People will say he should be in those positions, but it’s different when you’re in the game.

“You see Reguilon there, who had another brilliant game, getting forward, but he was across there to cover him. He was in the right place and the right time today, every single time.”
