‘Another mentality’ – Antonio Conte explains why Harry Kane ‘needed’ to leave Tottenham

Antonio Conte has said that Harry Kane needed to leave Tottenham Hotspur last summer, insisting that the striker deserves to win trophies to add to his legacy.

It was clear that Kane’s main motivation for swapping Spurs for Bayern Munich last summer was to finally lift some silverware and get that monkey off his back.

While things are not going to plan for Bayern this season, there is no doubt that the former Spurs man will eventually win some medals at the Allianz Arena.

While Conte might have struggled to get a tune out of many players at Tottenham, one player whom he did manage to get the best out of was the England captain.

Kane was struggling under Nuno Espirito Santo at the start of the 2021-22 season after his move to Manchester City fell through but the Italian rejuvenated the centre-forward as soon as he walked through.

While last season might have been a disappointing one for Tottenham and Conte, the 30-year-old still ended the campaign with an impressive 32 goals across all competitions.

Harry Kane needed to leave Tottenham, says Conte

All in all, Kane netted 43 times and picked up 14 assists in Conte’s 75 games in charge of Spurs (Daily Mail) and the 54-year-old has admitted that the Bayern Munich star was one of the best he has worked with.

When asked about Kane’s decision to swap Tottenham for Bayern, the former Spurs boss told The Telegraph: “We’re talking about a player who is amazing. This opportunity to play for Bayern Munich made him better. No doubt about his capacity to score. I think he needed to go and to change, to find another club, another mentality, another situation. It was important for him.

“He deserves to win trophies and we are talking about one of the best strikers in the world. He is one of the best I’ve worked with, for sure. He’s a good guy and a good person too. He needed this new experience, another chance. Now he is a more complete player than before.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Most Tottenham fans accepted the fact that Kane was well within his rights to move on after giving many of his best years to the club. It is understandable why the 30-year-old did not have the patience to be part of another rebuild. However, it is ironic that this is coming from Conte as it is the Italian’s failure at Spurs that eventually sealed the striker’s fate.
