Antonio Conte insists he does not want ‘to push the club’ over his future

Antonio Conte has said that there is no rush to extend his contract at Tottenham Hotspur and that he does not need a new deal to be sure of his future at the club.

Conte’s future has been widely discussed over recent weeks, with the Italian’s current contract at Tottenham running out at the end of the season.

Reports from Italy have suggested that the 53-year-old is stalling on signing a new deal at the North London club to see if Juventus make an approach for him at the end of the season (Calciomercato).

However, Football.London’s Alasdair Gold revealed earlier this month that Spurs have an option to extend Conte’s contract by 12 months, and he added that those close to the Italian believe that he would happy to discuss a new deal with the club.

Conte has now insisted that he and the Tottenham hierarchy are on the same page, and that he does not see any need for urgency over the comfort of an extension.

When asked if the break during the World Cup would be an ideal time for the parties to start negotiations over a new deal, he told Football.London: “There doesn’t exist a right time. It could be tomorrow. It could be the last day of the Premier League season. The most important thing for me and the club is to understand we want to continue together, to go in the same direction. This is the most important thing. Otherwise, I don’t see a problem. I don’t see another situation.

“I said in the past, I didn’t need another contract to be sure to stay in a club. Also, for the club, it’s a good investment to have a coach like me and my staff. I think at the right time I will take the best decision. At this moment, I’m really happy. I don’t want to push the club about the situation because it’s not the right time. We have just started the season and we have a long time to live together and to understand, to continue to work together.”

Conte reiterated that his working relationship with Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici is positive and suggested that the club are ‘happy’ with the current situation.

He added: “If the club and the manager want to work together they will continue to work together. If they don’t want to work together they finish. This is not important.” The most important thing for me is that I’m really enjoying working with Tottenham, with these players, especially, and the relationship with Daniel [Levy] and Fabio [Paratici] is good.

“I’m OK and I think the club is happy about this situation. They want to go and see. Now the most important thing for Tottenham’s present and Tottenham’s future is to get the best possible results, and we have to pay attention because after the international break some players come back not in perfect physical condition.”

Even though Conte seems open to building a long-term project at Tottenham, I suspect he wants to keep the club’s hierarchy on their toes to ensure that they will continue to back him. That is probably why he is not in a hurry to commit his long-term future at the club.
