Antonio Conte asked whether he plans on moving to a back four at Spurs

Antonio Conte has hinted that he would not hesitate to change his system at Tottenham, as he did against Wolves, if he feels it is necessary.

Conte suffered a third successive Premier League defeat on Sunday, falling to a 2-0 defeat at home to the West Midlands side.

Spurs fell behind by two goals after just 20 minutes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in what should have been a bounce-back performance after losing to Southampton in midweek.

Raul Jimenez lashed home a volley after just six minutes following some questionable goalkeeping by Hugo Lloris, before Leander Dendoncker added a second with Spurs failing to play out from defence.

In attempting to stop the onslaught, Conte reacted by substituting Ryan Sessegnon for Dejan Kulusevski before the half-hour mark as Spurs switched from a three-man defence to a 4-2-3-1.

The change came to no avail, though, as Wolves saw out the remainder of the match to dent another blow into Spurs’ hopes of reaching the Champions League.

After the match, the Italian was pressed as to whether he would make a change to his system in the long-term, to which he said (via Football.London): “I think that we conceded two goals. We conceded two goals and very difficult to comment.

“Then after 30 minutes I decided to change tactically and go man-to-man and I think we did well. But when you concede a goal you also have to understand the reason.

“If there is a tactical reason, if there are different reasons and at the moment we are struggling a bit with the confidence and the pressure.

“For me, I repeat, it is very difficult to speak about the pressure because the pressure is part of our job and I am used to living with it very well.

“But I know that there are different situations and we have to try and manage them much better. We have to improve in mental aspects. When I speak about improvement, it’s not only on the pitch but totally. I think we can improve.”

Conte realised that something had to give against Wolves and unfortunately Sessegnon was the sacrifice he needed to haul off. The system change made things slightly better for Spurs, albeit no goals were scored, but the damage had already been done early on. The performances need to improve quickly if they are to stay in the top four hunt.
