Antonio Conte claims Spurs defender can ‘become one of the best in the world’

Antonio Conte believes that Eric Dier has the potential to become one of the best players in the world in his position.

The Spurs man has taken to his new role under the Italian like a duck to water, cementing his spot as the central sweeper in Conte’s back three.

Dier showcased his range of talents in the game against Liverpool this weekend, not only looking solid at the back, but also pinging accurate long-range passes for fun.

Tottenham are due to play West Ham United in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals tomorrow night, coming off the back of that impressive 2-2 Premier League draw against Liverpool.

Conte will be looking for more of the same from his side, although hopefully with more clinical finishing in front of goal after Spurs spurned chances galore against the Reds.

It remains to be seen whether Dier is given the nod or if Joe Rodon starts in the central sweeper role against the Hammers.

Conte said (Charlie Eccleshare): “He can become one of the best in the world for his position. He needs to keep working hard to continue to improve, to understand the movement of the defensive line.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

The back three formation is sometimes the making of a centre-back who was previously struggling in a central back two. Dier has a background in midfield and defence, so this hybrid sweeper role could be perfect for him.
