Antonio Conte explains why he is ‘not worried’ about Eric Dier’s form at Spurs

Antonio Conte has claimed that he is not worried about Eric Dier’s form, suggesting that the defender’s struggles could be down to physical or mental fatigue.

Dier was one of Tottenham’s most improved players last season after Conte arrived through the door in November 2021. The centre-back was near flawless in the middle of the back three last season as Spurs managed to clinch a top-four spot.

However, mistakes started creeping into the 28-year-old’s game in the months leading up to the World Cup, with the England international guilty of making multiple unforced errors which led to goals.

That happened yet again in the Boxing Day clash against Brentford as Dier skewed a simple clearance, which led to a corner from which the home side scored their second goal.

Conte has now remarked that he has full faith in the centre-back but admitted that he is ready to take him out of the firing line if needed.

When asked about Dier’s form, the Italian told Football.London: “I was a player, I know there are many reasons when you are struggling with something. You are not 100 per cent physically, or mentally. You are a bit tired, but this is normal, especially if you want to play at a high level.

“Honestly I’m not worried because I know Eric’s capacity and what Eric can do with us. It can be that you have a period where you have to recover mental or physical energy but I am not worried.

“I have the other defenders that also give me the possibility to make rotations. If I see situations where I need to make rotations.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Whatever Spurs fans think of Dier, Conte clearly views him as an ideal fit to play as the central sweeper, owing to his aerial dominance, quality on the ball and leadership qualities.

I am in the minority of Tottenham fans who agree with the Italian. However, there is no doubt that the 28-year-old need to eliminate his lapses in concentration.
