Antonio Conte offers response over Djed Spence transfer speculation

Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte has refused to get drawn into the news suggesting that Djed Spence is on the verge of a move to the club.

The Athletic reported yesterday that Tottenham had made a breakthrough in their negotiations with Middlesbrough and the England Under-21 international could be set to undergo a medical before the end of the weekend.

Spence impressed during his season-long loan at Nottingham Forest last season, where he played a key role in Steve Cooper’s side to help them secure promotion to the Premier League with a play-off final victory against Huddersfield Town at Wembley.

Conte was posed the question about Spence during the pre-Sevilla press conference in South Korea earlier today and claimed he would not get drawn on offering his opinion out of respect for others, but did insist he is always looking to improve his squad.

Spence’s potential arrival would see him compete with Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal for the right wing-back berth in Conte’s side.

He told Football.London: “On Spence, we don’t want to comment on speculation. It’s disrespectful for the clubs and the players. We are always looking to strengthen the squad.”

The Spence deal appears to be only a matter of time before it is confirmed and will allow Conte to add a natural right wing-back to his side, alongside Matt Doherty with Emerson Royal likely to be the player who heads through the exit before the end of the transfer window.
