Antonio Conte reveals how Tottenham star has ‘really surprised’ him

Antonio Conte has admitted that he has been pleasantly surprised by how willing Harry Kane is to work hard for the team.

Kane appears to have now found his goalscoring boots after a lacklustre start to the season, with the striker having found the net four times in his last five Premier League matches.

His performance in Tottenham’s 3-2 win over Leicester on Wednesday was arguably his best of the campaign so far.

Although the 28-year-old would have been disappointed not to have converted some of his chances, his all-round play was exceptional, with the Foxes backline struggling to cope with his movement and hold up play.

Conte admitted top players can sometimes be selfish but insisted that what sets Kane apart is his willingness to put the team first.

However, the Spurs boss refused to go into the striker’s future plans, insisting that he is focused on the here and now.

Conte told Football.London: “Harry has shown to the club a great commitment and he shows every day a great attitude, a great behaviour and we are talking about a world-class striker and a fantastic player.

“If you saw the goal he scored against Leicester the assist he made for the Bergwijn goal, you understand the quality and the value of this player.

“Apart from this, we are talking about a really good guy, an honest person and a person who wants to work hard to improve. You can think this is normal but sometimes you can find players with great talent but lazy but doesn’t want to put themselves to the service of the team.

“Instead Harry has all this quality. I am really surprised in a positive way to see this characteristic of the play.

“Then as you know very well, now it is important to be focused on the present. To look too much forward is not good because now we have to build something in the present and be together with the right will, with the right desire to work very hard and try to improve our situation, this is the most important thing in this moment.”

Spurs Web Opinion

One of the reasons Spurs are so lucky to have Kane and Son, is their willingness to put the team first. Forwards who are world-class often tend to be selfish and that sometimes creates friction between them and their teammates.

This seems to be the case with the likes of Neymar, and to a lesser extent Mohamed Salah. However, Kane and Son are prepared to do the dirty work for the team, which makes them ideally suited to working with Conte.
