Antonio Conte reveals why it is ‘difficult to make promises’ to Spurs fans

Antonio Conte has admitted that it is currently difficult to make promises to Tottenham fans regarding the club’s immediate future.

The Italian has lifted Spurs to within touching distance of the Champions League places in the Premier League, but suffered a blow to his Carabao Cup campaign with a defeat in the semi-final first leg to Chelsea.

Conte later repeated that there was a considerable gap between Spurs and the West London outfit and reiterated the need for patience as he intends to lead a rebuild at the club.

The sobering defeat to Chelsea also led him to admit that he would not be drawn into making promises he can’t keep to Spurs fans when it comes to pushing for a top-four spot or bringing silverware back to N17.

Conte said (via Football.London): “In this moment for me it is very difficult to make promises to our fans, because I like to tell the truth and be realistic.

“It doesn’t mean I’m not positive because I always think positively and when I signed for Tottenham I thought always in a positive way, but I know that in England the situation is you have to fight again really top, top teams.

“Sometimes in England, you can think you play another sport when you play a game of football. It is another sport if you compare a game here and a game in other countries, when it comes to difficulty, intensity, the quality of the players.

“It’s great because you can compare yourself in the best league, but at the same time you have to be a strong team, a strong squad to be competitive.”
