Antonio Conte sends message from Italy after Spurs beat Manchester City

Antonio Conte took to Instagram yesterday evening to pay tribute to his Tottenham Hotspur players following their impressive 1-0 win against champions Manchester City.

The 53-year-old was not present at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium yesterday and remained in Italy recuperating after gallbladder surgery and was not yet well enough to return to touchline duties for the visit of Pep Guardiola’s side.

Responsibilities were instead handed to his trusted assistant, Cristian Stellino who revealed prior to kick-off that Conte had entrusted him to have full control in selecting the team (Football Daily).

Tottenham broke the deadlock after fifteen minutes when Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg did exceptionally well to find Harry Kane inside the box after dispossessing Rico Henry.

In front of his own fans, it was destined for Kane to become Tottenham’s all-time record scorer, surpassing the great Jimmy Greaves with his 267th goal for the club in all competitions.

The victory moved Tottenham to within just a point of Newcastle United who currently occupy fourth place in the Premier League table, with the north Londoners having played a game more.

Conte said on Instagram: “Always with You, even from afar. Proud of the whole Team.”

It was a spirited performance from Tottenham and arguably the best of the season with a number of players including Emerson Royal and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg stepping up to put in quality displays against the Premier League champions.

Tottenham will hopefully now have Conte back in some capacity for the trip to Leicester City at the weekend, where they now have to build on this result and keep pushing for the top four.
