‘Anyone better’ – Wayne Rooney sends touching message to Harry Kane after penalty miss

Wayne Rooney has congratulated Harry Kane on equaling his record as England’s top goalscorer and came to the striker’s defence after his penalty miss.

Kane drew England level from the penalty spot in the 54th minute by smashing the ball into the top-corner past his Spurs teammate Hugo Lloris after Aurelien Tchouameni had given France the lead in the first-half.

That goal was the Tottenham striker’s 53rd strike for the Three Lions, which means that he is now the joint-highest scorer in the nation’s history.

However, despite clinching the record, it turned out to be an evening to forget for the 29-year-old, who skied his second spot-kick over the bar in the 84th minute after Olivier Giroud had restored France’s lead six minutes earlier.

Rooney took to social media to lend his support to Kane after his penalty miss and insisted that he could not think of anyone better to take the record off him.

The fact that Kane has drawn level with Rooney despite playing 40 games fewer, shows just prolific he has been for England over the years. He is also the nation’s top scorer in major tournaments, which means that he has always turned up on big occasions.

Unfortunately, his penalty miss yesterday will live with him for a long time and some will unfairly use that to disparage his England career, but there is no doubt that the Tottenham man’s numbers speak for themselves.
