Arsenal could win race for free midfielder Tottenham wanted in January

Tottenham Hotspur failed to secure a deal for an experienced midfielder in January, and he could end up moving to Arsenal instead.

According to reports, Tottenham had expressed an interest in landing Leon Goretzka in the January window.

The six-time Bundesliga-winning midfielder’s current contract at Bayern Munich runs out at the end of the season, but the German giants decided to keep hold of him.

Bayern have subsequently confirmed that the Spurs target will be leaving in the summer on a free transfer, but it has now emerged that the Lilywhites will not have a free run at him.

Arsenal could beat Tottenham to Leon Goretzka

FC Bayern Insider have now confirmed that Spurs did show an interest in the German international despite landing Conor Gallagher in January.

However, the outlet reveals that Arsenal also showed ‘serious interest’ in the 30-year-old just before transfer deadline day.

The report says that there is ‘a strong chance’ that Goretzka could end up moving to the Emirates Stadium in the summer if the Gunners make an offer for him.

The experienced midfielder believes his playing style fits the Premier League perfectly and is keen on a switch to England.

Goretzka’s future could be sorted out very early

It was previously claimed by Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg that the Bayern star wants his next destination to be confirmed before the start of the World Cup so that he can concentrate on the tournament.

He revealed that apart from interest from the Premier League, Atlético Madrid, AC Milan and Napoli are also circling over Goretzka.

Plettenberg wrote on X: “Leon Goretzka wants to sign with his new club, if possible, before the World Cup. He is seeking clarity for planning purposes and to be able to fully focus on the World Cup, which is his major goal.

“Atlético are keen to sign him on a free transfer in the summer. From Italy, AC Milan are among the concrete options, while Napoli are monitoring the situation. The Premier League is also of interest to him.”
