Arsenal icon reveals he is relieved Spurs didn’t sign PL defender in January

Ian Wright has admitted he is glad Tottenham did not pursue a move to sign Brighton defender Tariq Lamptey in January.

Lamptey was linked with a move away from the Seagulls last month (The Sun) having impressed since securing a move to the Amex Stadium from Chelsea two years ago.

Tottenham, alongside Manchester United, emerged as potential destinations for the wing-back, but it was the former that were credited with being the likeliest to secure his signature (Manchester Evening News).

Despite the reported interest, the 21-year-old stayed at Brighton where he is expected to remain a key part of Graham Potter’s side.

Ian Wright was over the moon that Spurs didn’t make a move for the Brighton wing-back, although he admitted his surprise at no one making an effort to sign the youngster.

He said on the Wright’s House podcast (03/02/22): “You know what, I heard a lot of Tottenham fans going crazy that they didn’t sign Tariq Lamptey.

“I’m quite happy as well like, because I cannot believe that nobody has tried to pry that man out of Brighton.

“The thing with him is, he made his debut off the bench against Arsenal for Chelsea and he was literally the best player on the pitch. The only reason he didn’t make it at Chelsea was because Reece James is there.”

It will have taken a big fee to tempt Brighton into a sale of Lamptey, especially in January. He is usually one of their best players when he plays too, so that would have made a transfer even more complicated. The summer should be an interesting time as he would be perfect in Antonio Conte’s system.
