Arsenal legend admits he is ‘not surprised’ by Spurs interest in 27-year-old

Former Arsenal striker, Kevin Campbell has become the latest pundit to suggest that West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone would be a good addition for Tottenham in the summer.

Hugo Lloris has come under a fair deal of criticism over the last couple of weeks due to the mistakes he has made.

However, Jose Mourinho leapt to the Frenchman’s defence on Wednesday, insisting that the 34-year-old remains a top goalkeeper.

Reports previously indicated that Tottenham are looking at potential options to replace Lloris at the end of the season and Johnstone is one of the goalkeepers on their radar.

Spurs legend Glenn Hoddle admitted earlier this week that he has been impressed with the Manchester United academy graduate and urged his former club to snap him up in the summer.

Campbell has now revealed that he knew of the 27-year-old’s qualities and is not surprised to see the Baggies star being linked with Tottenham.

He told Football Insider: “Sam is a top-quality goalkeeper and a lovely lad by the way.

“I’ve met him and he is a really nice lad. In a season like this, your see the pedigree of the goalkeeper. The keeper has to be good just to keep them in certain games.

“He has done his personal stock no harm this year. Other clubs are looking and thinking, ‘If he was in our team he would be great.’

“I am not surprised that Spurs are looking at him. He’s been West Brom’s best player this season, he’s been amazing.”

I suspect that Spurs are looking at long-term replacements for Lloris and I expect the club to sign a young goalkeeper who can potentially be nurtured into taking over the number one shirt from Hugo.

However, the Frenchman is by no means past his best and was one of our most consistent performers until a couple of weeks ago. I believe a lot of the criticism he has been getting has been over the top.
