David Seaman was quite impressed with Guglielmo Vicario’s performance against Brighton, remarking that the Tottenham number is getting better with every game.
Vicario has had an exceptional first six months in the Premier League, having quickly become a fan favourite among the Spurs faithful.
Not only has the Italian pulled off some outstanding saves since the start of the season but he has also demonstrated a lot of composure with the ball at his feet while also being quick off his line, qualities which make him an ideal goalkeeper for Ange Postecoglou’s system.
However, over the last few weeks, question marks have been raised about the Tottenham star’s ability to cope with set-pieces, with some pundits flagging it as an obvious weakness (TNT Sports 1 – 03/02/24 via Daily Mail).
Some might feel that the criticism is unfair and that the 27-year-old has not been protected as much as goalkeepers usually are. That is certainly the opinion of Ange Postecoglou, who declared last week that he is very pleased with the way his number one has dealt with corner kicks (Football.London).

Guglielmo Vicario is impressing the goalkeeper’s union
Seaman appears to be a fan of Vicario, waxing lyrical about the saves that the Spurs man pulled off on Saturday.
The former Arsenal and England goalkeeper stated on the Seaman Says podcast: “To be fair to them, they played well. Vicario made some amazing saves, by the way, yet again. He’s just getting better and better. That was a great win for them.
“He made two brilliant saves, he made one from Welbeck and then he made one from Mitoma I think it was. He went through and he actually toe pokes it and it’s quite a close-range save.
“The fact that he toe pokes it makes it even harder for the goalkeeper, because you don’t know where it’s going, you see very little backlift.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Most former goalkeepers and goalkeeping experts seem to have nothing but complimentary words about Vicario, with most of the criticism appearing to be coming from those who do not understand the demands of the role. That suggests that the Italian has not done much wrong over recent weeks.
