Arsenal legend blasts shameful decision to award Spurs goal

For the majority of Tottenham’s game against Watford, it looked like the Lilywhites were going to fall to their third straight defeat but they managed to rescue a point in the end.

A late defensive mix up from Watford allowed Dele Alli to finish from a tight angle beyond Ben Foster.

There was some controversy surrounding the goal with the Watford players protesting to the referee that Dele had handballed it, only for VAR to rule that it wasn’t a handball.

However, the wrong graphic was flashed on the big screen at the stadium suggesting that the goal had been overruled, which created even more confusion.

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has now blasted the officials for allowing the goal to stand and has insisted that it was a clear handball by the Tottenham midfielder.

The 53-year-old claimed that Watford were robbed off their first win of the campaign.

Speaking to Final Score on BBC One (19/10/2019 5:15 pm), Keown said, “The shameful thing in a way is that Watford were so close to getting an incredible first win of the season, they have been denied.

“Okay, I respect what he [Alli] is saying, he doesn’t think it hit his arm. But it does look like it hit the arm. There’s no doubt that VAR and the referee certainly got that one wrong. It hits the arm for me. And I cannot believe the decision.”

I disagree with Keown as the replays showed that the ball came off Alli’s shoulder/chest area rather than his arm. However, the bigger mistake by VAR was to fail to give a penalty when Gerard Deulofeu was fouled by Jan Vertonghen. All things considered, Spurs were pretty fortunate to come away with a point.
