Arsenal legend claims Dele Alli will not be talked about by Spurs fans in 25 years

Paul Merson has claimed Dele Alli has not created enough of a legacy at Tottenham to be spoken about in 25 years’ time.

Alli departed Spurs to join Everton in a late move on transfer deadline day which brought an end to a seven-year stay in North London (BBC Sport).

The 25-year-old is set to link up with new Toffees manager Frank Lampard, who was confirmed as the club’s successor to Rafael Benitez on the final day of the window.

Alli’s switch to Merseyside will act as a fresh opportunity to reignite his career having struggled to reach the heights he set himself in seasons prior.

But despite producing stellar campaigns in his first three seasons for Spurs, Merson does not believe Alli will be looked back upon by the club’s fans when his career is over. However, he added that Dele has another chance to make a name for himself at Everton.

In his column for Sky Sports, the former Arsenal midfielder said: “In my career, I’ve been fortunate. I played for Middlesbrough 27 years ago and if you see a Boro fan they still talk about me.

“Same with a Portsmouth fan, an Aston Villa fan and an Arsenal fan. He’s got to leave that sort of legacy for himself now.

“Will they be talking about Alli at Spurs in 25 years? No. But now he’s got a chance to be talked about at Everton and you just hope he does well and gets that.”

Even though Alli was part of the side that came so close to creating something special at Tottenham, he will be spoken about down the line. He was one of the key pieces in Mauricio Pochettino’s lineup that took the Premier League by storm at such a young age, and for that, he will be mentioned in the future.
