Arsenal legend claims Spurs have made the signing of the summer so far

Paul Merson has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur’s capture of Yves Bissouma is the best signing of the summer transfer window so far.

Bissouma became Tottenham’s third signing of the summer a couple of weeks ago following the arrivals of Ivan Perisic and Fraser Forster on free transfers.

According to reports, the North London club agreed on a fee of around £25m with Brighton for the Mali international, which could rise to £30m including add-ons (Football.London).

The Daily Mail claimed last week that Tottenham’s qualification for the Champions League was one of the key reasons the Lilywhites were able beat the likes of Aston Villa and Newcastle United to Bissouma’s signature this summer.

The report added that both Villa and Newcastle were surprised by the price the Lilywhites paid for the midfielder as they expected Brighton to push for £35m.

Merson has now stated that Tottenham got a major bargain by landing Bissouma for the price they did.

The Arsenal legend insisted that the 25-year-old would have improved all of the top-six sides in the Premier League and admitted he is at a loss as to why Manchester United did not pursue him.

The pundit told Sportskeeda: “This is an unbelievable coup for Spurs as Yves Bissouma could have played for any of the other top-six sides in the Premier League. He’s better than Scott McTominay and Fred, I have no idea why Manchester United didn’t go in for him!

“He runs the show, affects football matches right from the get-go and is an all-round midfielder with quite a bit of Premier League experience under his belt.

“No disrespect to Spurs, but why didn’t some of the other teams look at him and consider making a move for him?

“I look at Liverpool’s midfield and feel he could play for them, especially if someone like Fabinho we’re to get injured. £25million in this day and age – it’s nothing.

“Spurs have nabbed an absolute bargain with Bissouma and he, in my opinion, has been the signing of the summer in the Premier League so far.”

In terms of pound-for-pound value, I do not think any club would be able to do a better deal this summer than the one Spurs pulled off for Bissouma. The club also deserve credit for managing to keep the deal under wraps until it was almost fully done.
