Arsenal legend hails Spurs man’s transformation under demanding Jose Mourinho

With Tottenham sitting at the top of the Premier League table after eleven games, several Spurs stars are deservedly getting plaudits for their performances.

The form of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Eric Dier is certainly worthy of praise but one player who has taken most people by surprise is Serge Aurier.

When Tottenham snapped up Matt Doherty in the summer, it looked as though the Ivorian’s days at the club could be numbered, certainly as a first-choice right-back.

However, Aurier has started the season in superb form and seems to have displaced the Republic of Ireland international as Mourinho’s preferred choice at right-back.

It is perhaps a demonstration of the trust that the Tottenham boss has in the former PSG man that he had no hesitation in starting him in crunch matches against Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Aurier hardly put a foot wrong in those three games and repaid his manager’s faith by proving that he can be switched on for the full ninety minutes.

Arsenal legend, Ian Wright has admitted that the Spurs right-back looks a completely different player this season and claimed that it could be because of the added competition that the signing of Doherty has brought.

He said in Wrighty’s House Podcast: “He’s got them on side, when you look at the team from goalkeeper, defence, Hojbjerg really helps that central pairing for a start, Reguillon, even when you watch Aurier the other day, he looks like a different sort of player.

“I think we’re going to see less mistakes from him because he knows that Mourinho will not tolerate it, and he’s got Doherty who can come in and maybe take his position.”
