Arsenal legend labels one Spurs star ‘fantastic’ after World Cup performance

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has praised Cristian Romero following his performances for Argentina during their successful World Cup campaign.

Romero came into the tournament in Qatar having missed Tottenham’s last six matches in all competitions with muscular issues (transfermarkt) but recovered in time to play his part in Lionel Scaloni’s plans.

While Argentina’s first match of their Group C campaign did not go to plan when they were the victims of an upset by Saudi Arabia, Romero was brought off in the 59th minute of the 2-1 defeat.

Despite the early banana skin, Romero proved to be a vital cog in Argentina’s defence which resulted in a remarkable final against France that saw the South American outfit triumph following a penalty shoot-out.

Romero became the third Tottenham player to lift the World Cup while under contract in north London, following in the footsteps of Jimmy Greaves and Hugo Lloris.

Keown told talkSPORT (19/12/22 – 10.45 am) when asked about Romero: “I thought he was fantastic.”

Romero has proven that he is fully over his muscular issues that kept him sidelined in the lead-up to the tournament and Spurs fans will now be expecting the Argentine to show similar levels of commitment to his club side over the next few months.

It is unlikely that he will feature at Brentford on Boxing Day given the short turnaround between the final and the resumption of the Premier League campaign, however, hopefully he will be back for Aston Villa on New Year’s Day.
