Arsenal legend questions whether two Tottenham players are ‘good enough’

Former Arsenal striker, Ian Wright has admitted that there are makings of something special at Tottenham this season but questioned whether Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez are good enough to fulfil the club’s objectives.

There was plenty of doom and gloom around the club after they started the season with a 1-0 home defeat to Everton, with some questions being asked of Jose Mourinho.

However, Mourinho’s men quickly proved their doubters wrong as they produced some terrific attacking football against the likes of Southampton and Manchester United.

The Tottenham defence was understandably questioned after their late collapse against West Ham but the North Londoners have since tightened up at the back and conceded just one goal in their last three Premier League games.

Spurs now boast the joint best defensive record in the Premier League but Wright admitted that he still has doubts over Alderweireld and Sanchez.

He said on the Wrighty’s House podcast: “As hard as it is for some people to give that man [Mourinho] some credit, he’s starting to get it now.

“I think that Tottenham fans and the players are starting to see it.

“In respects to the defence, with Sanchez and Alderweireld – are they good enough, I’m not sure.

“But the way Kane, Son, Hojbjerg, Reguilon are playing, it’s starting to happen for Spurs. Something’s happening.”

It is fair to say that most Spurs fans share Wright’s doubts over Sanchez. Although the Colombian has the talent required to be a top defender, he always seems to have a mistake in him and has not developed much over the last two seasons. It does not seem like he is going to get much of a look-in anytime soon, with Mourinho opting to name Joe Rodon on the bench over Sanchez in the last three Premier League matches. The Dier-Alderweireld partnership looks really promising, although, the next few matches will be a big test for the pair.
