Arsenal legend still backs Spurs to finish above his old club this season

It was certainly a good weekend for Arsenal in the Premier League as they took a major leap above their top-four rivals.

Tottenham threw away a 1-0 lead away to Leicester, eventually losing the game 2-1 thanks to a rather questionable VAR decision.

Chelsea lost 2-1 to the 100%-record league leaders Liverpool, while Man United suffered a shock defeat to West Ham at the Olympic Stadium.

Many see these four clubs as the main contenders for the third and fourth spots in the Prem this season, with Liverpool and City looking head and shoulders above.

Arsenal are now fourth in the Prem table, with Tottenham down in seventh, Man United in eighth, and Chelsea in eleventh.

However, despite the fact that the Gunners are winning the race at the moment, their victory over Aston Villa at the weekend was anything but easy.

The Reds went down to ten men and had to score twice late on to escape with a 3-2 victory, something that Arsenal legend Paul Merson believes just papers over the cracks.

He said (Sky Sports 1 – The Debate – 23/09/19 at 1:10 pm): “It’s just covered the cracks. Fair play, great comeback, but you can’t keep on doing that. Sooner or later it will catch up with you.

“I still think Tottenham will come third. I still think Tottenham are the third-best team in the league, in my opinion.”
