Arsenal legend urges Gunners to challenge any Spurs move for 25-year-old

Kevin Campbell has urged Arsenal to challenge Tottenham in their rumoured pursuit of Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres.

Tottenham were reportedly unsuccessful with a £55m offer for Torres last summer as the centre-back chose to remain at El Madrigal (Marca).

However, Football Insider reported this week that Spurs want to add a top-class central defender to their squad this summer and plan on reigniting their interest in the Villarreal star.

The report added that Conte is a big admirer of the Spain international and considers him to be is one of the finest centre-backs in Europe.

Campbell has now said he can see why Tottenham want Torres, insisting that the 25-year-old would be an ideal fit for Conte’s back three.

He urged Mikel Arteta’s men to challenge their North London rivals for the centre-back when the transfer window reopens.

The former Arsenal striker told Football Insider about Spurs’ interest in Torres: “He’s a very good player. I think he’d suit Spurs down to the ground. He’s a quality footballer.

“I’d like to see Arsenal interested in him as well as Spurs. Mikel Arteta probably knows of him, but all you can say is watch this space.

“He’d fit into that Spurs system, the back three. Antonio Conte wants quality in these positions and in his squad, and he certainly fits the bill.”

Torres would likely be Conte’s dream signing for the left centre-back role as the Villareal man is a class above the other central defenders we have been linked to. However, plenty of top clubs are likely to be interested in the 25-year-old and Spurs would have to qualify for the Champions League to stand any chance of winning the race for him.
