Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of landing an experienced, well-decorated midfielder now look slim, and it is advantage Arsenal.
Spurs may have to wait until they have secured their Premier League status and hired a new permanent head coach before finalising their targets for the summer.
However, it appears that the Lilywhites have already begun identifying potential options, with a central midfielder thought to be a priority for Spurs.
It was previously reported that Tottenham and Arsenal had both expressed interest in a German international, but the North Londoners are now expected to struggle to get their man.

Arsenal are more likely than Tottenham to sign Leon Goretzka
Leon Goretzka will leave Bayern Munich as a free agent when his contract at the Bavarian club runs out in June.
Journalist Christian Falk has now told cfb Bayern Insider that Tottenham are indeed interested in landing the 31-year-old, but the player may be out of their reach.
Falk explains that Goretzka wants to join a club that can offer him regular Champions League football.
He adds that ‘there is a strong possibility’ that the Bayern Munich star ends up at the Emirates Stadium this summer as Arsenal want to add an experienced midfielder to their squad.
Goretzka is also attracting interest from around Europe
Falk goes on to explain in the report that the German international’s situation is also being monitored by several Italian clubs.
Among those are Inter Milan, who want to revamp their midfield this summer and have identified Goretzka as a key target, but it is revealed that the former Schalke man prefers a move to the Premier League.
Additionally, Manchester United, AC Milan and Galatasaray have also been credited with an interest in Goretzka.
