‘As things stand’ – Journalist shoots transfer warning to Tottenham and Levy

The Mirror’s Darren Lewis has said that Tottenham simply cannot afford to throw away the good start they have made to the season, insisting that Daniel Levy has to loosen the purse strings to give the side a realistic chance of finishing in the top four.

Despite back-to-back losses to Chelsea and Wolves, Spurs still find themselves just two points off league leaders Manchester City after 12 matches.

There is no doubt that Ange Postecoglou has exceeded what was expected of him in the first few months but Tottneham’s lack of squad depth was badly exposed at the Molineux Stadium.

Lewis has stated that the North London club would look to rectify that in January, remarking that they have already identified a couple of targets.

The journalist said on The Kelly & Wrighty Show: “As things stand, Spurs are doing well, scoring goals and in the top four where no one expected them to be at the start of the season.

“I think Aston Villa might be the one thing that the hierarchy at Spurs does consider because they are doing so well and they’re within striking distance of the top four. So Spurs have to stay in that picture and to do that they have to have more depth in January.

“I think they need another defender, another striker badly. Son has done superbly well but cannot be solely relied on. I think they’ll already be looking and probably have players in mind. There were one or two they tried to get in the summer but weren’t able to. But they will try to get others in.”

Daniel Levy needs to commit to Ange in January

While Tottenham usually do not do a lot of business in January and usually tend to make the bulk of their signings in the summer, Lewis warned the club that they would risk throwing away the good start if they fail to invest in the upcoming transfer window.

He added: “They’ve done too well so far to throw it all away by waiting until next summer and when you look at the other players around them, who are doing so well, to then kind of give up and wait until the summer when other teams are buying, recruiting well and moving forward. That really would be folly and before they know it could be left behind.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Irrespective of the messages that Tottenham are putting out ahead of January regarding the money they have available to spend, I expect the club to be quite busy in the window. I can see three new faces coming through the door so that Ange has a chance to build on this good start.
