Ashley Cole admits one former Spurs star always troubled him – Not Gareth Bale

Ashley Cole has admitted that former Tottenham star Aaron Lennon was one of the wingers that he dreaded playing against the most.

While Lennon might not be held in the same esteem as some of the great players who have played for Tottenham over the last couple of decades, the pacy winger was unplayable when he was at his best.

The diminutive attacker had extremely good close control and was among the best dribblers in the Premier League during his heyday.

The crowd at White Hart Lane would be on their feet every time he received the ball, expecting him to beat his man and get the ball into the box.

The England international often turned up in the big derby games against the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal and had some fierce battles with Cole.

Ashley Cole always had a tough time against Aaron Lennon

The former Blues star, who was undoubtedly the best defensive full-back of his era, named the former Spurs man as one of the players who troubled him the most.

Cole told Goal: “I played against some top players, you know, Aaron Lennon always gave me a tough time, Theo Walcott, Raheem Sterling, but the main one I would have to say is Cristiano.”

Lennon had the likes of Patrice Evra and Ashley Cole on toast on several occasions and was exhilarating to watch them at his best.

Unfortunately, the winger’s career waned once teams started shifting from a 4-4-2 to a 4-3-3 around a decade ago as he did not possess enough of a goal threat to play as a wing-forward.

The former Tottenham man’s size meant that he could also not do what the likes of Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia did and evolve into a wing-back.
