‘Ask Mourinho’ – Tottenham star’s father reacts to comments after Newcastle draw

Toby Alderweireld’s father Viv Alderweireld has spoken about Jose Mourinho’s comments in relation to the defender after Tottenham’s 2-2 draw against Newcastle United on Sunday.

Alderweireld and Serge Aurier were not part of the squad that travelled to St James’ Park, with Mourinho opting to keep faith with the same eleven that beat Aston Villa two weeks ago.

When asked why the pair did not feature, Mourinho explained after the match that neither player returned from international duty in time to take the COVID-tests and only reported for training on Saturday, a day before Tottenham’s trip to St James’ Park.

Mourinho’s remark had reportedly caused confusion at Spurs, with sources at the club revealing that Alderweireld reported back at Hotspur Way on Wednesday afternoon and trained along with the team over the next three days.

Photographic and video evidence do seem to collaborate the fact that the centre-back was put through the paces along with his team-mates on Friday.

Reports from Belgium indicate that Alderweireld feels the Tottenham boss lashed out at him for no reason and is seeking to leave the club in the summer.

When asked about Mourinho’s alleged lie about his son, the Tottenham defender’s father told Het Belang van Limburg: “Why? You have to ask Mourinho himself.

“I don’t see a problem. How Toby reacted? No. He’s not worried.”
