Atletico Madrid star names Spurs man most ‘underrated’ player in football

Rodrigo De Paul has named his international teammate Cristian Romero as the most underrated player in world football.

Romero’s rise over the last two years has been quite dramatic, with the centre-back being voted the Serie A defender of the year in 2020-21 before quickly establishing himself as a mainstay in the Tottenham defence after arriving at the North London club last summer.

Jamie Carragher even named the 24-year-old as his signing of the season on the back of his first season in the Premier League (Sky Sports MNF).

It did not come as a surprise when Tottenham activated the £46.5m option to buy the Argentine permanently last month, and Spurs fans will be hoping that the best is yet to come from the centre-back.

Romero has also become an indispensable part of Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina set-up, with the Spurs man playing a key part in the nation’s victorious Copa America campaign last summer.

The centre-back is certainly held in high estimation by his international teammates, not least De Paul.

The Atletico Madrid midfielder said (via journalist Adri Contreras): “Most underrated player in the World? Cuti Romero, he’s very very very good.”

I would argue that the best judges of a player’s quality are their peers who play with and against them, and it is quite telling that all of Romero’s Tottenham and Argentina teammates, rave about him. The 24-year-old has the potential to evolve into one of the best central defenders in the world over the next few years.
