Ange Postecoglou has been discussing the development of Dane Scarlett and revealed he will soon make a decision on whether to loan out the youngster this season.
The promising striker has been in and out of the Tottenham first team over the last couple of years but has been used sparingly so far. Scarlett has made ten appearances for the club and registered one assist, but is yet to get a goal for the senior side (Transfermarkt).
Scarlett gained valuable experience on loan at League One side Portsmouth last year, making 40 appearances, and contributing six goals and two assists (Transfermarkt). However, he found opportunities more limited when former manager Danny Cowley was replaced by John Mousinho.
Now back in North London and with Ange Postecoglou to impress, Scarlett has featured during pre-season and even netted against Shakhtar Donetsk earlier this month.
Dane Scarlett decision coming soon at Spurs
It was recently suggested that Scarlett would now remain at Spurs this season (Evening Standard). However, in his latest press conference (via Football.London), Postecoglou suggested that decision has not yet been made.
He said: “We’ll see. He’s been really good. I’ve been really impressed with him since we’ve come in. He had a bit of an injury which set him back a little bit in pre-season but we’re keeping him with us at the moment.
“I’ll probably make the decision on Dane in the next couple of weeks. It’s always a fine balancing act of whether they stay with us in the training environment, depending on the type of game time we think they’ll get, as opposed to going out and getting some meaningful game time at his age.
“We’ll make that decision but I’m really happy with the way he’s developed and the way he’s training and we’ll make that decision over the next week or so.”
Spurs Web Opinion
If Dane Scarlett could play ten or so games for us this season, you’d have to think it would be worth keeping him at this club. However, the benefit of him playing a full season in the Championship could be huge, so it will be interesting to see what Postecoglou ends up doing.
