‘Baller’ – Some fans praise Spurs player’s international performance

Some England fans were left impressed with Harry Winks’ display in the heart of England’s midfield as the Three Lions brushed aside the Republic of Ireland 3-0 last night.

Just like in North London, Winks has also fallen down the pecking order for England, with Gareth Southgate seeming to prefer likes of Jordan Henderson, Declan Rice and Kevin Phillips over the Tottenham man.

The 24-year-old was handed a start against the Irish, in what was largely a second-string side named by Southgate.

The Spurs man was given the responsibility of mopping up in front of the back three as he played alongside Mason Mount in centre-midfield, behind a front three of Jack Grealish, Jadon Sancho and Dominic-Calvert Lewin.

The Tottenham midfielder got the assist for the first goal as his looping delivery into the box was met by a towering header by Harry Maguire.

He then played a key role in the second goal as he won the ball back and set the attack into motion that ended with Sancho curling home.

Winks also helped England control the possession and tempo expertly while putting out fires whenever Stephen Kenny’s side looked to spring a counter-attack.

On the back of his performance on Thursday, some England fans want to see the Spurs midfielder given more opportunities.

Spurs Web Opinion

There are not too many better than Winks at recycling possession and helping move the ball from the defence to the final third. However, the problem he has at Spurs is that Hojbjerg does the same job and is much better than him defensively. Winks and Hojbjerg seem to be too similar to play together while Sissoko’s attributes seem to complement the Dane’s.
