‘Bang average’ – Jamie O’Hara blasts big money Spurs signing who has ‘wellies on’

Jamie O’Hara has pulled no punches with his assessment of Davinson Sanchez’s performances in a Tottenham Hotspur shirt.

The central defender was named in Antonio Conte’s starting eleven for yesterday’s 2-1 defeat at home to Newcastle United which marked Tottenham’s second Premier League loss in the space of five days.

With Cristian Romero sidelined due to a calf issue in the wake of the match at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening, Sanchez formed a central defensive back three alongside Eric Dier and Clement Lenglet for the visit of the Magpies.

Sanchez became Tottenham’s club-record signing when he arrived from Ajax in the summer of 2017 for a reported £42million but has struggled to hold down a regular first team-place, especially under Antonio Conte.

O’Hara was scathing in his opinion of the Colombian international, questioning how the club ever paid such a high transfer fee and suggested that he he playing with wellies on, in reference to his ability when in possession of the ball.

He told talkSPORT: “We’ve been found out, the squad’s bang average,”

“Romero gets injured as well and you have to play (Davinson) Sanchez.

“I don’t know what Sanchez is playing at. I mean, how we paid £45m for him I’ll never know, he’s just an accident waiting to happen.

“I don’t know what he puts in his boot bag, but they’re not football boots, because he’s playing with wellies on.

“Honestly, it’s ridiculous how bang average he is.

“It makes everyone on edge to try and get the ball out and play out from the back, it makes everyone look so bad.

“If you haven’t got Romero and Ben Davies playing, don’t even bother trying to play out from the back.”

SpursWeb Opinion

When Tottenham are missing Cristian Romero from their line up, there is a massive gulf in quality in who steps into his shoes. Sanchez has proven time and time again that there is a mistake in him and is a liability.

While O’Hara is correct, there should have been fingers pointed in the direction of other players following the Newcastle loss, especially Hugo Lloris.
