Barcelona man reveals the toughest opponent he has ever faced plays for Spurs

Frenkie de Jong made a high-profile move from Ajax to Barcelona last summer and is already proving himself to be a vital player in Spain, racking up 37 appearances (Wikipedia).

De Jong represented Ajax for three seasons in the Eredivisie, making 89 appearances and scoring five goals.

The midfield man was a crucial part of the 2018/19 domestic title-winning Ajax side, however, the Dutch giants lost out to PSV Eindhoven the season before.

Steven Bergwijn was a part of the PSV title-winning sides in 2014/15, 2015/16, and 2017/18, facing De Jong on numerous occasions during his final three seasons in the Netherlands.

Bergwijn played 149 games for PSV, scoring 31 goals before making a move to Tottenham Hotspur in the January 2020 transfer window (Wikipedia).

Despite the fact that De Jong has come up against some of the top players in Spain, as well as various stars of the Champions League for both Ajax and Barcelona, he named Bergwijn as the toughest opponent he has ever faced.

The Dutch international said (Live interview for Barcelona): “It is difficult because, of course, I don’t only play against one player during a match. But at Ajax, I was sometimes used as a central defender and we played against PSV. Steven Bergwijn is then the most difficult opponent for me. He now plays with Tottenham Hotspur.”
