Barcelona president comments on Lucas Bergvall to Spurs reports

Spurs are on the verge of completing the signing of Lucas Bergvall from Djurgardens, and now Barcelona president Joan Laporta has shed some light on what kind of offer Barcelona made for the young Swedish star.

It had looked like Tottenham were done in the January transfer window, but the club this week began to be linked with the exciting midfielder Lucas Bergvall.

The player, who turned 18 today, had spent the week visiting both Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur as the two sides vied for his signature (Expressen).

While the Catalan club were confident they could wrap up the deal (Fabrizio Romano), it is Spurs who look to have bagged the highly rated talent, with The Athletic reporting Bergvall has travelled to London to complete the move today.

How Spurs won the race for Lucas Bergvall

It is believed Spurs had assured Bergvall would go straight into Ange Postecoglou‘s first-team plans next season (Mundo Deportivo), after spending the next six months on loan with his current club, Djurgardens, in the Swedish league.

Now, it seems that promise may have been crucial in landing the youngster ahead of Barcelona, as the club’s president, Joan Laporta, has explained that Bergvall was offered a place in the Spanish side’s B team.

Laptorta told the Barca Times: “Lucas Bergvall? Deco has been following him for a while. As far as I know, he still hasn’t signed with Spurs, but their offer is higher than ours. They tell us that he plays like Frenkie [de Jong]. We offered him to start in Barça Atlétic with projection into first team.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It’s very interesting that Postecoglou and Spurs believe Lucas Bergvall has a role to play next season in the first-team rather than going out on loan again. If you’re good enough, you’re old enough, as they say, and I can’t wait to see what this kid can do in the Premier League.
