‘Bargain’ – Some Spurs fans react after Everton sign former transfer target

It was confirmed yesterday that Everton had snapped up Andre Gomes from Barcelona in a deal worth £22 million (BBC).

The 25-year-old signed a five-year contract with the Toffees after impressing last season during his loan spell at Goodison Park.

Gomes failed to live up to expectations in the two seasons he spent at Barcelona but he managed to regain his form and confidence last season, where he made 27 Premier League appearances for Everton.

It was reported a few weeks ago that Tottenham had agreed on personal terms with the Portuguese midfielder and were poised to strike a £26 million deal with Barcelona (Daily Star).

However, that never came to fruition as reports indicate that Tottenham have turned their attention to the likes of Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso (Sky Sports and BBC).

Some Spurs fans on social media rued the fact that Spurs allowed Gomes to join Everton in a bargain deal, while others insisted that he wasn’t good enough to help the Lilywhites mount a title challenge.

Spurs Web Opinion

Given the fee being reported, it is clear that Everton had a free run at Gomes. If Tottenham had been in for him, the Portuguese international would have likely chosen Spurs since the club can offer him Champions League football. So while Gomes it a top player, we at Spurs Web believe that the likes of Ndombele and Lo Celso are a cut above the 25-year-old.
