Bassong left out of Cameroon squad

Tottenham have been handed a massive January boost after Cameroon opted against calling up Sebastian Bassong.

Bassong had been expected to join up with the squad for the African Nations Cup, leaving Harry Redknapp expressing his concerns over defensive cover.

With Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate perenially injured, Spurs are currently left with only Bassong and Michael Dawson as their recognised centre-backs.

Bassong has been in good form for Spurs this season, contrbuting one goal as well as a series of sound defensive displays, so his omission from the squad comes as a shock.

However, it bolsters Redknapp’s defensive options come the turn of the year, something the Spurs boss had expressed concerns about.

Left-back, Benoit Assou-Ekotto has been called up however, meaning Gareth Bale will deputise in his absence.
