Battle lines drawn as Aurier ready to challenge Trippier

According to the London Evening Standard Serge Aurier is ready to battle it out with Kieran Trippier for the position of our first-choice right-back, insisting: “Now is my time.”

Trippier had an outstanding World Cup for England and is on extended leave and will not be back to training until seven days before our first game, at Newcastle, on August 11th.

Aurier will have an extended run in the team particularly on the trip to the US and he is ready to take advantage of Trippier’s absence.

“Trippier is on holiday and it’s my moment to take my chance,”:said Aurier. The season is long. I start now and Trippier is coming afterwards. It was the same for me [last season]. Now is my time. If I play good, then the gaffer has a choice [to make].

Aurier added:“I’m happy for Tripps. I sent him a message for the game [England’s semi-final defeat by Croatia] and for the World Cup. I said congratulations for your World Cup.

He went on to say:“It’s good competition for me – not a bad thing. Trippier gave me some things and me [to him] too. If Trippier is good, he plays. If I am good, I play. It’s no problem for me.”

Aurier did have some erratic performances last season but it looks as if he is ready to kick on. It can only benefit Spurs to have to top quality right backs vying for one place. An interesting battle awaits
