Bayern Munich wanted to poach Tottenham star but latest twist will change plans

Bayern Munich may have attempted to sign a Tottenham star on a discount this summer, but that is no longer on the cards after recent developments.

While Spurs picked up a crucial win against Wolves, they remain in grave danger of being relegated, sitting two points off safety with four games left to go.

Reports indicate that Tottenham may be forced to sell many of their highest earners if they go down, as they would not be able to sustain a big wage bill in the Championship.

One of the club’s highest earners has been on Bayern Munich’s radar for a long time, but the Bundesliga club’s hopes of signing him may have ended.

Bayern Munich wanted to poach Xavi Simons from Tottenham

Bayern Munich honorary president, Uli Hoeness, revealed recently that Vincent Kompany was keen to take Xavi Simons to the Allianz Arena last summer before Tottenham eventually won the race for the attacking midfielder.

A couple of days ago, journalist Christian Falk suggested that the Bavarian side could make another attempt to land the 22-year-old this summer if he becomes available on a discount.

Falk told CF Bayern Insider: “It’s a question worth asking in terms of whether someone like Xavi Simons would appeal if Tottenham were to be relegated this season. Vincent Kompany and Max Eberl both like the player.

“However, he was simply too expensive to sign from RB Leipzig last summer. Uli Hoeness, the former president of Bayern Munich (but still part of the supervisory board), shared a nice story about this particular topic. We knew Kompany paid a visit to Tegernsee (an hour away from Munich), where Hoeness lives, along with Christoph Freund, the sporting director. They were asking permission to sign Simons. However, Uli Hoeneß simply said you can’t sign Simons, but you can have some apple pie!

“This summer, we have to see! Xavi Simons has to be really cheap for Bayern to even consider it. In the meantime, there are a few other names on the shortlist that are more highly rated. Of course, if FC Bayern can’t sign their top options and Simons is affordable, then perhaps this could be an option. But not for the moment.”

Xavi’s ACL injury may have ended his chances of a summer move

If Bayern were planning to raid Spurs for the Dutchman this summer, they may now have to shelve their plans.

This is because it has now been confirmed that Xavi has torn his ACL after being forced off with a knee injury in Tottenham’s win over Wolves.

The attacking midfielder is expected to remain sidelined for the rest of the calender year and is set to return to action in 2027.
