BBC Sport chief writer predicts where Spurs will finish in Premier League this season

Phil McNulty, the chief football writer at BBC Sport has revealed his predictions ahead of the new Premier League campaign, and he joins a growing list of pundits and journalists who are backing Tottenham Hotspur to finish in the top three.

As the new season draws ever closer, many fans and experts are assessing the credentials of all 20 Premier League clubs and trying to work out who will finish where come May 2023.

After a successful summer transfer window and six new faces at Tottenham Hotspur, plenty of professionals within the game have spoken positively of the club’s chances going into the new season.

Arsenal legends Ray Parlour (Sky Sports) and Ian Wright (ITV – 30/07/2022, 4:55 pm) have both backed their North London rivals to have a good season and cement their place among the top four in the division.

Likewise, Manchester City midfielder Rodri recently hinted Spurs and others could disrupt the established top two of City and Liverpool and play a part in the title race this year (31/07/22 – via Liverpool Echo).

Now, Phil McNulty has added his support for the North London club and places them third in his predicted Premier League table for the 2022/23 season. City and Liverpool take the top two respectively and Chelsea round out McNulty’s top four.

He said (BBC Sport): “I share the big expectations for Spurs this season because they are now in the hands of one of the world’s great coaches in Antonio Conte who will give – and demand – a winning mentality this club has lacked.

“Conte has also convinced chairman Daniel Levy that deals are best done early so there has been some serious squad strengthening.

“Richarlison, at £60m from Everton, gives an already stellar attack another dimension and added depth, while Yves Bissouma was outstanding for Brighton in midfield last season. Croatia international Ivan Perisic will bring experience, quality and versatility.

“Out on a limb here. Top four and a trophy for Spurs as long as they keep Mr Conte happy.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It’s hard not to get carried away with all the support and praise Spurs have been receiving ahead of the new season, but it’s important to keep feet on the ground.

It’s an exciting time for the club, and the sky is the limit under a manager like Conte, but the top six is looking extremely competitive this year.

That said, if Spurs can take third place, and add some silverware to the trophy cabinet, there’s no doubt that would be an incredible season.
