‘Be a contender’ – Tottenham player insists club ‘don’t just want to compete’

Davinson Sanchez has insisted that Tottenham Hotspur do not just want to compete with the big boys next season but win big trophies of their own.

Tottenham had a strong end to the 2021/22 campaign, looking defensively resolute while also scoring goals for fun, and managed to get back into the Champions League thanks to a 5-0 win on the final day of the season.

Rather than resting on their laurels, the North London club have been extremely active in the transfer window, bringing five players through the door so far this summer.

Spurs’ transfer business has got others to stand up and take notice, with Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp even naming the Lilywhites as one of the contenders for the title next season during his interview with ESPN FC last week.

Sanchez has now said there is belief in the squad that they can do something special during the upcoming season.

The Colombian told Football.London: “The squad has been happy with the atmosphere that we created, the spirit that we ended with last season.

“We’re looking forward. We’ve been competing against the best teams in the league and we want to reproduce that as well in Europe.

“We have many players in the squad who have the experience to fight against the big teams around Europe. We don’t just want to compete, we want to arrive with possibilities at the end of the season to be a contender.”

Whether Spurs are able to compete with the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool remains to be seen but one thing that is seemingly guaranteed is that Conte’s men will be one of the fittest sides in the Premier League.

The Italian and his coaching staff have been putting the players through extremely demanding pre-season drills (Daily Mail), and Sanchez believes the work the players are putting in will hold them in good stead for the upcoming campaign.

When asked about intense pre-season work, the centre-back responded: “It’s been tough. Pre-season means that. We’ve got to get ready for a season that we are trying to fight for as many challenges as we have.

“The fans are expecting the players to be ready for the challenge because it will be a big one this season. We want to build everything to be in the place we want to be, where we used to be before.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Going toe-to-toe with Liverpool and Man City over a whole season will be extremely difficult as both those teams have made it a habit to get 90+ points. Conte will certainly get the players believing that they can compete with the best but a third-place finish and a trophy will represent a brilliant season for us.
