‘Beautiful’ – Cristian Romero has no regrets about celebrating in opponent’s face

Cristian Romero has admitted that he does not regret celebrating in Kylian Mbappe’s face after Lionel Messi’s goal in the World Cup final.

Romero clenched his fists and roared in Mbappe’s face from point-blank range after Messi put Argentina 3-2 up in extra time.

It seemed like the goal was going to be the match-winner but there was another twist in the tale as France were awarded a penalty, with Mbappe converting from the spot to take the game to penalties.

However, Romero and Argentina had the last laugh, emerging 4-2 winners in the shootout to lift the World Cup after 36 years.

When asked about celebrating Messi’s goal in the manner in which he did, the Tottenham man insisted that it was just payback after the PSG star gave Enzo Fernandez an earful in that game.

When shown the photo, Romero told TyC Sports (as translated by The Sun): “The photo is beautiful.

“We are always the bad guys in the movie, but Mbappe was saying very bad things to Enzo. Leo just scored the goal and it came from inside me to do that.”

The centre-back admitted that he is now a lot more relaxed about his future ambitions after helping become a world champion.

He added: “Surely for the next few years I’ll be more calm, without this pressure in the national team for having achieved everything.

“Being world champion is the most important thing to happen to me as a player, but recently, I have relaxed a little.

“I leave it a bit aside otherwise my Tottenham teammates get a bit angry.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Personally, I am not a fan of celebrating in players’ faces as it shows bad sportsmanship. However, we also do not need to pretend that it is some sort of huge moral issue.

Footballers are not robots and given the competitive edge it takes to reach the top level, some emotions are going to spill out and perhaps cross the line on occasion.
