Belgian league star reacts to being linked with Tottenham and Liverpool

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked to a number of potential summer signings already in recent weeks, one of those being Gent rising star, Jonathan David.

The Express reported earlier this month than both Liverpool and Spurs were interested in the forward, who is valued at around £20m in the report.

The 20-year-old is a Canadian attacker who is said to be gifted with both feet and is an emerging star in the Belgian First Division.

David has played 40 games for Gent this season, scoring 23 and assisting another 10 in that time, including three goals in the Europa League (Transfer Markt).

Transfer Markt claim that his current market value is £18m. David has already been capped 12 times for the Canada senior team, scoring 11 goals in that time (Wikipedia).

The youngster was asked in a recent interview how transfer rumours affect him (Sport/Foot): “Nothing is done, but I’ll reassure everyone: these transfer rumours don’t affect me. I’m concentrated on the playoffs and my agent does the rest. When everything will be over, I’ll talk with my agent and the club.

“I renewed (until 2023) because the board were satisfied with my performances and I had nothing against signing a new deal. Why not do it, then? It’s not an extra season on my contract that will scare clubs, and I’m sure Gent won’t ask a ridiculous price for me”.

The publication even went as far as to ask him what he thought about the likes of Tottenham and Liverpool tracking him: “It incites me to raise my level. People can say the Belgian league isn’t very strong, but it’s a good launchpad for a youngster who wants to give themselves a chance at the highest level. In Belgium, we’re constantly on show. Many foreign clubs come to recruit here”.
