Ben Davies says his friends were ‘surprised’ to hear what Postecoglou did when he first joined Spurs

Ben Davies has revealed that Ange Postecoglou is not the sort of manager who likes having too many one-to-one meetings with his players.

Davies has played under several world-class managers during his decade at Spurs and has experienced various man-management styles and tactical ideas under Mauricio Pocehtttino, Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte.

However, the Welshman, like many, would have not come across someone like Postecoglou, who has his own unique system and training methods.

The Athletic explained last year that one of the tenets of the Australian’s methodology is that he maintains a certain distance from his players and does not like getting too close to them.

The outlet revealed that Postecoglou lets his coaching staff direct the day-to-day training sessions after explaining to them what he wants them to do and keeps a close eye on everything that goes on during those sessions.

Postecoglou doesn’t like one-on-one meetings at Spurs

Davies has now revealed that the 58-year-old is not one for too many one-to-one chats, remarking that it is not unusual for managers to be like that.

The Welshman said on The Gab and Juls Show: “It seems standard but it’s not what I’ve ever experienced in football – a new manager coming in and having one-to-ones with everyone.

“I told this to a few friends and they were surprised as well. Really it came down to watching us in training. We had meetings as a team, but no real one-on-ones to ask where you stand.”

Postecoglou might feel that keeping a distance from the players helps him be more impartial in his assessments of their performances and his selection decisions.

That also helps maintain his aura among the squad and ensures that when he addresses the players before matches, his words have a greater impact.
