Benfica manager claims that striker Spurs missed out on ‘will be a world-class player’

Benfica manager, Jorge Jesus believes that Darwin Nunez, who was reportedly on Tottenham’s radar over the summer, could usurp Joao Felix as the Portuguese club’s most expensive export.

Nunez had a prolific 19/20 season for Spanish second division side Almeria after moving to the club last summer, as he netted 16 times in the league (transfermarkt.com).

Tottenham Hotspur were reportedly considering a move for the 21-year-old as they looked for a striker to serve as a back up to Harry Kane (Football.London).

Other Premier League sides were also reportedly interested in the Uruguayan international, including Brighton, Sheffield United and Southampton.

However, Nunez instead sealed a move to Benfica at the start of last month and Tottenham ended up signing Carlos Vinicius from the Portuguese side on a season-long loan with an option to buy.

Nunez scored a brilliant hat-trick in his first European game for Benfica as Jorge Jesus’s side overcame Lech Poznan 4-2 on Thursday.

Speaking after the game, the Benfica boss insisted that the striker is destined for the top.

He told Sport TV (as relayed by Goal.com): “We got it right. We must not forget that he is a kid, he is 21 years old, there is a lot about the game that he does not know yet. He will learn with me and Benfica.

“All this decision-making ability, finishing and speed…He was Benfica’s most expensive purchase, and when there is no pandemic, he will be the most expensive sale. He will be a world-class player.

“Unfortunately for me, maybe I will lose him in a short time.”
