Bent believes winger will be ‘a great signing’ for Spurs at reported £20m price

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Darren Bent believes that the Lilywhites can do a lot worse than take a punt on Demarai Gray this summer, amid reports that Leicester City are willing to sell the winger for £20 million this summer.

The pacey winger has fallen out of favour at Leicester under Brendan Rodgers and has been linked with a move away from the King Power stadium.

It was reported a couple of weeks ago that Spurs had begun talks with the Foxes for the 24-year-old, with Jose Mourinho having personally spoken to the wide man about a potential move to North London.

It was then revealed that Leicester had informed the Lilywhites that they were willing to accept around £20million for Gray, who had just a year left to run on his contract with the East Midlands club.

Bent urged Tottenham to not pass up the opportunity to sign the former Birmingham man for the rumoured asking price.

He told Football Insider: “That is not an awful lot of money, when you think about it, £20million, that nowadays, what does that really get you?

“People are overpaying for a lot of players and you’re not really getting a lot for £20million but to get someone like Demarai Gray, I think it would be a great signing for that kind of money.

“I’m all for that signing.”

I can see the logic behind signing Gray as he can potentially be a very good impact substitute off the bench. However, considering that we paid well below £20m for both Hojbjerg and Doherty, I do not see how that price represents good value for money for a player who is surplus to requirements at Leicester and only has one year left to run on his contract with the Foxes.
